The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
