An individual who laced sweets with sedative and gave them to youngsters at a summer program in Leicestershire has admitted sexual offences against two boys both nine and ten years old.

The defendant was arrested after eight children and one adult experienced illness at Stathern Lodge in the summer month.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on Friday.

Yet, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was accused of, which was involving a young boy.

The defendant was held in detention before a additional proceeding on 28 November.

'Candy game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

Ruben engaged in a "treat game" with the minors, the legal counsel said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge Ruben had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and youngsters had previously become sick the subsequent day.

She explained the man had been able to explain this over a long period as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

The legal representative added: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about the activities, for good reason.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

The legal counsel explained materials including infant oil, Vaseline and syringes were located, and his stepson notified the police about his suspicions.

She said the man continued to conduct the "treat game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all sick the following morning.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she added.

The police watchdog, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was investigating law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative explained the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson called the authorities once more.

She said Ruben then played the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
