Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
