Combined British-French Air Strike Strikes Daesh Arms Cache in the Syrian region
Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
