Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, but then he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they are improving or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived originally when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
